⚠️ WARNING: Fake Servers on the Server List – Please Read

preview

Hello everyone,
this thread is meant as a warning for new and returning players.
Currently, the Steam version of Enemy Territory (ET 2.60 vanilla) has a serious problem with fake / impersonating servers on the server list.
What is happening?
Many servers on the list are not real community servers.
They copy names of existing, popular servers to trick players.
These servers redirect you elsewhere after joining.
In many cases, they force you to download files that later break your game, making it impossible to play on legitimate servers.
This problem has been getting worse over time, not better.
Why Steam players are the main target
Most returning players:
Install Enemy Territory from Steam (because it’s easy).
Open the server list.
See dozens of servers that look legitimate.
Click one of them — and fall into the trap.
In many cases, players never even discover the real ET community, because their first experience is already broken.
❗ This is NOT your fault
The old ET 2.60 vanilla server browser:
Has no real protection against this abuse.
Sorts servers in a way that makes fake servers easy to push to the top.
Relies on an uncontrolled master server.
This is a known and long-term issue.
✅ What you SHOULD do (recommended)
If you want to play Enemy Territory safely:
👉 Install ET: Legacy instead of using the Steam ET 2.60 client
ET: Legacy:
Has a much better server browser
Actively blocks many fake servers
Is actively maintained by the community
Is fully compatible with real ET servers and mods

🛑 If you stay on Steam ET 2.60
Please help the community:
Report suspicious servers via Steam / Bethesda support
Warn other players in discussions
Do not trust servers that:
Use copied names
Instantly redirect you
Force strange downloads
The more reports there are, the harder it is to ignore this problem.
Final words
Enemy Territory is still alive because of its community.
But fake servers and lack of control are actively driving players away.
If you are new or returning:
👉 Skip the old Steam client. Install ET: Legacy.
Let’s protect new players and keep the game alive.
