Fresh ET Install, Having trouble with graphics quality

WTZZTW · 9 Sep 2026 at 17:11 · permalink

Hello folks. I hope this is too redundant of a question.

I used to play this can obsessively years ago. I just reinstalled it, installed 2.60 patch.

My problem is that I can only run it in 800x600. Anything beyond that and it just zooms in.

Works fine on the servers, just can't get the graphics right.

I can set the resolution with scripts, or in-game and it just zooms in. Even the main menu on start up is zoomed after I change resolution .

The graphics quality I want is what I see when its zoomed in.

Native resolution for my monitor is 1920x1080.

Are there graphic settings that I should be adding to my config file? I'm still on the same old computer, but now running win10.

i7 2700k

GTX 660's

p.s. I messed with the field of view but this problem is in the main menu too, field of view is something else.

Have you tried ET:Legacy ? https://www.etlegacy.com/

It's the still-developed, modernised client.

There's also ET:e which has some fancier graphics tricks but is more experimental and a lot less popular.

Dude mess with r_mode

That should fix it

1. The 2.55 install, 2.6b patch method is obsolete. Redownload the full 2.6b installer directly from Splash Damage.
2. Get ET:Legacy afterwards.
3. Profit

ET:Legacy does not use the main program directory for downloads/mods on windows. It creates a game folder in your username’s documents folder.

Thanks, I got Legacy. Last time I played it was brand new. Looks pretty good now. Does it perform just like the other traditional method? No lag issues? ( I didnt play it much yet).

I was shocked to see on Steam, last I played it was only a dream idea to keep the game alive.

Still use the 2.6b patch with legacy?

vanekmatras · 9 Sep 2026 at 17:14 · permalink

You don't need to install 2.60b if installing legacy.

Vivat_Hussaria · 9 Sep 2026 at 17:14 · permalink

No. Just download the FULL 2.6b installer.

All you need to do is download et legacy and ur good to go

Steam addition only helped in a way that some (re)discovered the game, but it is basically just old 2.60b with its issues. It doesn't have any integrations you are familiar with with modern games.

ET:Legacy is the engine you should play with

if you run ET:L or 2.60b enter gfxinfo in game console to see if the game recognized your GPU (specificaly GL_RENDERER line), if not you should try to update GPU drivers

I think you have you might have zoom at 125 or 150% on your Windows setting.
