How I fixed my 1% Low FPS drops and stutters in CS2, Fortnite & PUBG (Resolution Bottleneck Fix) (R5 5600 XT, RTX 5070)

Hey everyone, wanted to share my experience fixing severe 1% low drops and micro-stutters in CS2, Fortnite, and PUBG.

I’m running a mid-range CPU (Ryzen 5 5600XT) and really good GPU (RTX 5070) which easily handles 2K AAA gaming, but was severely struggling with FPS drops in competitive titles. Playing CS2 on 4:3 (1280x960) and 1080p gave me around 600+ peak FPS, but with horrible drops down to 150–200 FPS during heavy fights and executes.

We've all been used to those classic "low res / low settings" since the CS:GO days. But times have changed — modern GPUs are ridiculously fast, and dropping your resolution too low just chokes the processor with a severe CPU bottleneck.

Of course, a CPU bottleneck can be fixed by just upgrading to a top-tier processor. But the truth is, when playing on low 4:3 resolutions, even the best CPUs on the market struggle to deliver a completely flat frame-time graph without micro-stutters — it's simply a matter of platform architecture and throughput limits.

I tested my FPS by switching my resolution in Fortnite to 1440p (2K). Surprisingly, my frame times instantly smoothed out and average FPS actually went UP by \~200 FPS compared to 1080p because it shifted the workload directly onto the GPU (same in PUBG).

I did the exact same thing in CS2 by switching from 1280x960 to 1920x1440 (4:3 stretched 2K):

* Average FPS went down slightly (by \~60 FPS).
* All random freezes and frame drops completely vanished.
* 1% Low FPS skyrocketed by almost +200 FPS.

If you don't want to switch platforms to AM5 right now due to current DDR5 prices, but want rock-solid frame times, this is essentially the only working solution for mid-tier rigs. Instead of lowering your resolution like we used to a few years ago, force your modern GPU to do the heavy lifting by going 2K.

Hope this helps anyone running a similar config!

CPU will be the issue, it's getting old. I had a 5600 and my 1% lows were all over the place, especially cs2 and pubg ( I have a 3080 12gb & 32gb ram also). I upgraded to a 5800x3d and things are wayyyy smoother

This is solid info. I was doing the same thing for long time, keeping resolution low because that's what everyone says for competitive games. never thought it would be the thing causing stutters.

switched to 1440p in last week and the difference is night and day. my 1% lows are way more stable now, even if the average fps number is a bit smaller. worth it for the smoothness alone.

I have this issue only in CS2. Every single other game I tried runs smooth and fine, but CS just freezes and crashes. The FPS stutters from 240 down to 1, and it crashes before a match starts, during a match, or even right when I start shooting I've tried everything and read tons of Reddit posts, but nothing works. I even tried switching to 4:3 at 1440p, but it didn't change anything, I'm still having the exact same issue..

Can you approve this? I got my 1% from 190-200 to around 240. I've been testing this for three months now. Although the new resolution causes a weird feeling with my aim.

What you are doing here is limiting your fps. The same thing can be achieved with an fps limit if you want to have control of your graphic settings.

An fps cap of 250 with 150 1% lows is better than 350 fps with 70 1% lows. In this case capping your fps to 250 gives you a better experience.

Well, I decided to tackle this issue head-on. First off, I wiped my old 8-year-old Windows installation and did a clean reinstall, along with fully upgrading my old HDD to a new 7 GB/s SSD.

My setup is split now: the OS is installed on a separate M.2 SSD running at 3.5 GB/s, while all my games are on the new 7 GB/s SSD.

Plus, I did a full system optimization: stripped down Windows, deleted Xbox Game Bar and unnecessary overlays, optimized Nvidia Control Panel settings, and fine-tuned all in-game settings in CS2.
