i’m coming from FACEIT CS2 and Valorant’s (built in) ranked system, and i’ve got a few questions about TF2’s EU scene:
\- Where’s the best place to start?
\- What does matchmaking look like?
\- How is skill determined (ELO, win/loss, etc.)?
\- What’s the anti-cheat situation like?
\- How are comms abuse and bans handled?
I’d really appreciate it if someone could answer these as best they can. I’m excited to finally play TF2 in a proper ranked environment.
I don't know the pug (pick up games) situation in EU is, but etf2l is the eu league
We dont have a traditional ranked system(we do but its hot garbage and nobody uses it) everything is premade scriming and matches
Matchmaking is based on division and they have rules for who can play in what division, and alting is punishable
I mean its just what u do in game, if ur dropping an average 500+ dpm (damage per minute) in an open lobby, a low or even mid team would pick u up easily

In all seriousness, typically manual moderation of cheaters/cheating
Comms abuse and bans is based on league, nobody's usually spamming slurs in chat, and if they do just report it and mods will usually sort it out

There is EU Newbie Mixes Discord server, pretty active lately
6s has a bigger player base, needs less players to run, is what is taught in newbie mixes and tf2cc, and is more fun for the average player on a team

from personal experience:
\- TF2Center first to get familiar with the main two formats and discover the class you enjoy the most, then look for newbie-friendly pug discord servers to learn strats and comms
\- To find a team, play scrims and official matches you need to register in a league from your region which would be ETF2L.org in your case and create a recruitment post for the Open division, your desired format and class you wish to play
\- Highlander requires more players, coordination and organization, 6s is significantly more popular though seasons don't overlap so you could play both if you wanted to
\- All leagues have their own division systems to determine player's skill. In ETF2L, from lowest to highest: Open-Low-Mid-High-Premiership

\- Varies from league to league, but from what i've seen ETF2L can be either very lenient or totally petty when it comes to stuff like toxicity, homophobia and racism

1. Best place to start is probably TF2center to familiarize yourself with the format. Far from perfect, but it's a starting point. From there you can try finding some national pickup sites i.e. tf2pickup.pl for Polish pickups or join EU newbie mixes.
2. You sign up for a season or a cup with your team, admins generate some tables and you get scheduled default dates for official matches. Everything beyond that is your team leaders responsibility, including scrims, changing default match date, getting mercs, uploading logs, screenshots, etc.
3. I think you might have an easier time finding matches for 6s, though that's more or less just statistics and speculation on my part.
4. There's no ELO. You start in fresh or open and go up from there based on how well you do in matches, essentially assigning a skill for yourself. Time and results should tell if you were adequately placed in a division and you can also get mentors to help with that.
5. If you spot any foul play you can make a ticket to the AntiCheat team via Discord or write an e-mail. I think the situation is good overall, but I'm an AntiCheat admin for ETF2L myself, so I could be biased.
6. Handled via the ticket system, much like AntiCheat. You can make a League Admin ticket or a Community Moderation ticket, depending on the type of abuse being
I'd add that RE: 6s or HL, if you are coming from other game's competitive, definitely 1000% 6s. 6s is for competitive gamers who happen to play TF2, HL is for TF2 players who want to play a little more seriously. If you have not yet contracted the cognitohazard of "maining" a class there is no reason to touch HL.
what is it
A community for European players that hosts the 6v6 games and welcomes those who have never played competitve before. The people there are ready to help and give advice, and if you get used to it and keep playing with nice results, someone may notice you and suggest that you play on the team (at least that happened to me)
