Have you ever caught someone trying to get into your account?

I work around cybersecurity, so I probably notice these things more than most people 😂

But I'm curious about the non-tech side of it.

Have you ever had a random login attempt, password-reset email, weird MFA notification, or some other sign that someone was poking around your account?

The interesting part is that sometimes the first clue isn't even a security alert. It's some completely random thing that doesn't make sense.

What's the weirdest one you've experienced?

Some random person once sent me a dm asking me to vote for her friend who was in a cooking contest, with my generosity,I said ..okay sure. He went ahead and sent me a link to the voting site , a few minutes after I casted my vote , I got logged out of my instagram account . Luckily, I got it back then set up 2FA real quick. I was lucky he was slow.

yeah nothing security related tipped me off, was just a random spotify email saying welcome to your new device from a city i've never been to. took me a minute to realize someone had actually gotten in

Nothing too exciting, but when I was in high school one of my "friends" was obsessed with another friend. So much so he stalked, harassed and at one point even broke into the dude's home to see him (they're both gay).

Years later, the victim friend got a friend request from him on Facebook and told me about it. Almost as though it were timed I got a security alert for Facebook that a login attempt had failed.

Someone in Pretoria tried to log in.
I didn't live in Pretoria, but the psycho sure did.

Just a few weeks ago, I discovered that the phone number listed for account recovery on my Protonmail address was a phone number in the US. I have absolutely no idea how it got there, I am sure you know Protonmail uses two passwords login and other security features.

I've had my Protonmail address since the beginning of Proton so it is a very simple name and I always get lots of suspicious emails and people using my address for all kind of things and subscriptions, but this was a first. I quickly changed my password after this.

Whenever I get a password reset email I login and mess up with something. I mean what is the point of using someone else email address. They could just make one they're gonna throw away.

A bit ago my primary email got leaked somewhere, everyday i got like 20 attempts to log into my Microsoft account. I changed passwords and changed the email associated with my Microsoft account.

Oof, 😭 Glad you managed to get the account back. That link was definitely doing more than just collecting votes lol.

I work at a hospital and Im shocked by the shear amount of people who stay logged into their personal Gmail accounts. I do the right thing and log them out and delete that profile from the actual computer

That’s the kind of alert people usually ignore too. “New device” from a city you’ve never been to is a pretty good giveaway though 😂

That timing is creepy as hell

yeah thats the scary part, i almost deleted it figuring it was just another spotify email. the random city is the only reason i stopped and actually looked, otherwise i wouldve never noticed

Only when they called my husband and had him logging into our accounts for them
