CAT 6 spool for home use in the UK

I'm in the UK, and about the set up my office at home. I have an RJ45 wall outlet in the room that I'm going to connect everything from. I'll be connecting a few devices (5-10) so to keep things neat I want to make my own CAT6 patch cables.

What cable should I be using? I remember reading somewhere I don't a solid spine for patch cables, but where can I buy a spool of this? Ideally it would be white, but I can live with other colours. I don't need loads, but if I have to buy 100m I will.

Where would you get this from in the UK? What brand? Any help is welcome! thanks :)

You should only make your own cables for long runs between keystone jacks. Buy premade patch cables for anything short.

It's more reliable and less hassle.

If it’s all the same room just buy some preterminated patch cables of the size you need. Unterminated is more for running behind walls and it tends to be thicker than preterminated patch cables.

White, solid copper, should do you fine for in-wall.

I'd personally just buy ready made patch cables. You can get them in a range of colours and lengths, fairly cheaply - especially if you buy multi packs.

I find terminating cables to be a pain, so only do it if I absolutely have to. A good set of crimpers and wire strippers help, as do the easier to use ethernet plugs (either pass through ones so you don't have to worry about getting the lengths of each individual wire correct, or ones with the sled so you can line up the individual wires in that and then slide it in).

Rhino Cables and Cable Monkey do good patch cables, and sell 100m reels as well. If you buy a reel, avoid CCA (copper clad aluminium) as that can have signal quality issues.

Any reason you want Cat6?
Cat5e will give you 1Gbps speeds and is cheaper and easier to work with.

That being said, as others have mentioned, if it's just for some short runs, pre terminated could be the way to go.

Don't cheap out on the RJ45 heads and crimper if you do decide to go down the home made route!

There's zero reason to make your own cables unless you're running long home runs inside walls.

It's not for in wall, just within the room.

I remember reading that I shouldn't go for this type because the plastic thing in the middle of the cable makes it a little inflexible. Thoughts?

Oh yeah no it'd be a headache.

I have cable, jacks and termination tools. I still buy patch cables, they're so inexpensive and are tested properly.

If you just want to for the sake of saying "I made these, yay", grab some very cheap cat5e and make sure the connectors you buy are suited for the cable. For example, stranded or solid core.

I have CAT6 from the RJ45 jack to the router, which has a 2.5Gbps port on it. I also have 2.5Gbps on my NAS, and when I upgrade my desktop I will almost certainly get one with >1Gbps.

Of those cables in that link, what are the different types of cables? Which is the most similar to a bog standard patch cable?
