Networking Speeds do not match. Router Admin speedtest VS Webpage speedtest. What is going on here? Photos for reference.

So as the title says I ran a speedtest through my routers login which shows close to my maximum download and upload speeds from my ISP. Ran the same test through the speedtest webpage and got drastically lower numbers. Both tests done on the same computer with the same wireless 5G connection. What am I missing here?

Context: I recently upgraded my modem and wireless receiver to WIFI 7 to achieve closer to the ISP advertised speeds. My previous setup was many years old WIFI 6 connection which usually saw the same speeds from the second test.

Are there some settings I need to tinker with or any way to know my actual speeds or was upgrading my network a waste of money and time?

I ran the same tests directly on my phone using 5G while sitting at my computer. Saw essentially the same results from the routers admin login to the speedtest app.

Those speed tests are probably not using the same methodology to test as they are from different developers. I would recommend that you use a speed test app on your computer like the one from Ookla rather than from a webpage.

Como tu teléfono muestra la misma diferencia, yo sospecharía más de la conexión Wi-Fi que de tu ISP. Prueba a hacer el test conectando la computadora directamente por Ethernet. Si por Ethernet obtienes resultados similares a los del router, tu conexión a Internet está bien y solo habría que revisar la configuración o la señal del Wi-Fi.

Yea I think you are right. The router is testing the speed directly whereas the webpage is using the WIFI connection. Seems the upgrade from WIFI 6 to 7 was not necessary because the distance from the modem is still the same resulting in slower speeds. Thought I would see some difference given WIFI 7 is theoretically 5x faster :(

I have tested the ethernet and receiving the advertised speed. The WIFI is the issue but I thought upgrading from WIFI 6 to 7 would see an increase in speeds since 7 is theoretically 5x faster yet I see no difference. With my upgrades I also have a 6G connection but that is performing even worse with 50mbps average download speed. Seems WIFI 7 was a waste of my time and money for my application.

What is your WiFi channel width? Is the device that you are testing from WiFi7 capable?

I'm getting over 800 Mbps up and down using WiFi6 on a 5 year old chromebook. The AP is about 10 feet away and behind a wall. I see about 300 Mbps on a WiFi5 AP, also 10 feet away and through a wall.

As another commenter asked, does your device you are testing on support wifi 7. Not many actually do, laptops or pcs will require a new wifi card or at least a usb dongle like the Nighthawk Wifi 7 USB 3.0 Adapter

But really how congested is the band you're using? I'm guessing not much, as most devices don't even support wifi 7 yet.

Test it connected via ethernet and/or right next to your router wirelessly.

Ensure your pc wifi drivers are up to date after updating, turn windows power saving OFF if it's on,

Device Manager → Network adapters → your Wi‑Fi adapter → Properties → Advanced tabLook for “Preferred Band”, “Band”, or “Wireless Mode” and set to Prefer 6 GHz or IEEE 802.11be if available.

Also if you're unaware the further you are away from it, the worse your signal will be. Hence the almost need for mesh systems with wifi 7 unless you are in the same room or connected wired.

The ping(round trip time to the server) was like 66% higher. That's gonna slow things down. Also the infastructure inbetween might have been more congested or slower.

Yeah if you only have 1gbps internet, wifi6 is enough.

Wifi 7's headline number comes from 320MHz channels and those only exist on 6GHz, which is the band that dies fastest through walls. At your distance you end up back on 5GHz at the same width wifi 6 was already using, so the numbers don't move.

Channel width is the modem default with 5g maxing out at 160hz and 6g at 320hz. Recently purchased a WIFI 7 router and wireless receiver for my computer. I was expecting better speeds using the same 5g signal used on my WIFI 6 setup but it is exactly the same. Computer is set up 10-14m from the router through 2 walls. I am able to get the 6g connection with 2 bars but it only receives 50mbps DL.

5g band has 2 devices connected. My PC and phone. An ethernet connection nets me the full 1gbps connection. I will follow the details you have listed and see if any settings are awry. I am approx. 10-14m from my router. I am able to get the 6g connection with 2 service bars which I thought would net me faster speeds but instead nets only 50mbps.

I am not familiar with a mesh system but my modem is capable of it as I saw it in the admin settings. I have the Asus Tuf be9400 wifi 7 modem. If I added a mesh system would I receive my 1gbps connection over WIFI?
