When draft picks are taken away are less players drafted in a given year?

How does it work? I'm assuming if say the Clippers have the 2nd pick that the person who is 3rd just becomes 2nd but what about the last picks in the 2nd round? Are they up for grabs? Do teams bid on them?

Less players are drafted.

Silver really just inflated the value of the Clippers' second round picks for free. SMH

There will be 59 picks in the draft (probably more because of expansion). Whoever would have gone 60th will instead be an undrafted recruit.

29 first round picks. As simple as that

There really isn't a benefit between being drafted 60th in the draft and being an free agent signing.

Taking away a 1st round pick is taking away a guaranteed contract (multi year) and roster spot. Its not a 2nd rounder they taking a spot from. They should have every pick slide up on spot since it is effectively the same thing for the teams, but is more fair for the players in the draft class

Yes, less total picks in the draft

Artemka1950 · 7 Sep 2026 at 12:12 · permalink

It wont matter because by the time it happens, two teams will be added to the league

1 less pick but rules are rules.

Honestly, the only other fair scenario would be to make it the 30th pick and hold a lottery of the worst teams to see who gets it each year.

Yeah, the picks usually just move up when one is forfeited, so nobody magically gets added to the draft and the final pick doesn’t turn into some kind of bidding war

So basically someone at the very bottom gets bumped from draft night straight into the undrafted free agent pool
