Looks like Stellantis is delaying their EREVs again. The Grand Wagoneer was supposed to start production in May and it's now slated for November. The Ram 1500 EREV was originally supposed to come out in 2025 and is now set for production for April. Bummer. I was looking forward to the Ram. Hope it doesn't get canceled entirely.
I have a sneaking suspicion these won’t ever make it to the market. The cost of these have to be absurd compared to what people will pay, and their strategy of going balls deep into v8s again for bigger vehicles is paying off.
The price, unreliability, and depreciation on these things will all be incredible.
I don't know... I don't think these products will have much success in the market. They're going to be far too expensive IMO. Putting one and a half drivetrains into a vehicle... I get why on paper some see the appeal. But in practicality I think there's a lot of issues even if execution is good.
Ram is doing well right now with the reintroduction of the Hemis, aggressive pricing, increased acceptance of the Hurricane, etc. Sales are way up for the 1500. I think they've just made some smart changes for 2027MY (no more eTorque, passenger screen is optional now, wider Surround View availability). Rumble Bee family is coming, TRX is back.... Yeah I just don't think its time to throw this product out there.
And then after the disaster that their plug-in system turned out to be... I'd want this to stay in the oven as long as possible.
I have no faith in this company being able to pull this off while making it reliable.
They can’t do reliable 4xe phev. They can’t do reliable Bev vehicles. What makes anyone think they can do a range extender correctly. Their software sucks balls and they have the shittiest product of the major players. This will tank.
Other companies are having trouble bringing EREVs to market. While Toyota and Hyundai are doing so, they are having trouble. If they are struggling it is no surprise Stellantis and VW are essentially failing.
What happens in 3 years when CAFE penalties are reinstated? The enthusiast part of me is glad the V8s are back but every other logical part knows the party can't and won't last forever.
They go to L6 turbo again then. Or 4 cylinder hybrid turbo or whatever.
A standard ICE powertrain probably costs $10k all in for their pickups, whether L6 Turbo Hurricane or Hemi v8. A 92kwh battery alone probably costs that when scaled to Tesla’s volumes, probably more like $15-20k for Stellantis. Then you need motor/drive units, the inverter/cabling/generator, and the engine itself. You’re probably looking at - powertrain that costs them 3x their base powertrains today.
The question is how many customers are willing to pay $20k extra for this? If not $20k then you’re making less money per unit sold so why would you want that? If it was a competitive issue (worried about falling behind or want to get ahead of others to steal share) then that’s your argument but there’s really no good business motivation to do this in my mind. If govt subsidies came back that’s different, but I don’t think that’ll happen.
These were purely compliance cars. There is currently no significant regulations they need them to comply with so they're no longer needed. They'll keep delaying indefinitely until after the 2028 election.
Do you have any sources for any of your $$ here? Most of the crate engines from mopar are >$10k by themselves. Obviously Stellantis wont be paying the same price, but that doesn't even take transmission into account.
EREV's will not happen. Stop making them happen. Just get a regular gas car, or a hybrid, or a BEV. Everything else is just a waste of everyone's time and energy.
These things use the Pentastar V6, probably much cheaper than the Hurricane
