During the latest XB2 podcast, Jez Corden has answered to a question about the future of Blizzard RTS.

Question "Jez, with the rumor about Nexon gaining access to the StarCraft IP, could this be for the next RTS installment? I feel like Blizzard has the teams and resources to cover any other genre in-house, so I figured this would be RTS-related since they don't really have a dedicated internal team to tackle the genre anymore. Looking forward to Blizzcon, have a great weekend!"

Jez Corden "i don't know of Nexon has and RTS thing either. I would Imagine that if Nexon's licensing It, It's probably for some kind of mobile game, some kind of multiplayer game. I would Imagine. I don't think necessarly It would be for an RTS. Probably something more casual in mind. Blizzard has obviously worked with Nexon, Netis, and other companies for mobile game spin-offs of their properties.

However i will say as a part of a Blizzcon kind of preview, i do know there's a western studio known for RTS games that Is currently working with Blizzard for something and this studio has previuosly worked with Microsoft on of its strategy games\\.\\ So i do think Blizzard is gradually working back towards doing strategy staff. I think they're probably following the Age of Empires model where where Blizzard has like a centralized RTS production team and they outsource the actual developing the game to like a specialist studio that make RTS kind of strategy games. So i want to believe that we'll get a fullyfledged tried and tested and true StarCraft 3 eventually. Will It be built by Blizzard in house? Probably not but It believe it will be produced by Blizzard in house though wirh Blizzard leading the concept, the story and than they will work with one of these other companies to actually put the pen to paper as it were. So i suppose watch this space and we won't have to wait long to find out what the end result is".

In my opinion the western studio could be Relic Entertainment that has previuosly worked on Age of Empires 4.

They are an indipendent studio now.

And i could imagine the RTS they are working on could be Warcraft Chronicles.

There were some leaks about It

This Imagine Is probably fake but "Warcraft Chronicles: "meet the teams".

What famous RTS studio? Westwood and Ensemble are dead and its obviously not Blizzard. I can’t think who else would be famous

djabrailwoods · 5 Sep 2026 at 17:11 · permalink

Relic Entertainment or Creative Assembly

Creative Assembly? Wouldn't be the first time they've worked on an Xbox-licensed RTS either, as they developed Halo Wars 2 in partnership with 343 Industries.

No way its CA. They are busy with 2 Total War games. A friend of mine had a good guess. Blackbird interactive. Owned by Microsoft. Experience with sci fi rts and doing nothing but a slay the spire clone announced in 2024 and then never released

Those are the only 2 famous studios. The only other RTS studio outside of them is Petroglyph.

Relic or Blackbird Interactive.

I really respect both studios but I don't know how I feel about them taking on Starcraft considering their most recent RTS outputs (Homeworld 3 was bad, and Relic had that horrible Warhammer : Age of Sigmar game, and DoW3 before).

Curious what this could mean with Xbox also having a rumored Age of Empires 5 in the works. Cuz 4 was co developed with Relic correct?

Like could relic be in both of them?

No, i don't think so. Forgotten Empires is probably working on Aoe5 in Unreal Engine

Maybe King Art, but probably not. They're working Dawn of War 4 and probably don't meet the minimum qualification for famous.

Just a heads up, the CA team that made Halo Wars 2 are the Alien Isolation developers, not the Total War developers.

if they go with relic they really need to keep a close eye on it because age of empires 4 was good but homeworld 3 was rough. really rough.

Relic makes sense. They have a long history of working with Microsoft and RTS.

It being called Warcraft Chronicles is interesting. I wonder if it is a prequel RTS. There's lots they could go back and explore and it would be better than being Warcraft 4 since it would overlap with the story of World of Warcraft.
