Long time DOOM fan, new QUAKE fan - a question for the community

backlashgg · 9 Sep 2026 at 20:12 · permalink

Hi all,

I'm a long time DOOM fan and most enjoy that game when I'm UVMAXing from pistol start individual levels. It seems most modern wads are built around this format, or at least accommodate it.

My question: in your view, what is the most fun way to play QUAKE?

Breaking down the question:

\- traditionally, is hard the chosen difficulty for boomer shooter vets?

\- do you prefer to play continuous, or do you pistol / shotgun start each map?

\- do you save mid level / quick save/load or do you only save at the end of each level?

Now, obviously, there's play however you want, but I'm more asking what the general consensus is on the most fun way to play QUAKE.

i save scum. play whatever difficulty but honestly ive played so much quake im not here for a bad time. i'd rather just enjoy myslef and generally do normal. i like to keep my weapons but if the map is a good map you can always just go for a fresh start. i've played it for so long i don't need to prove anything to anyone - just here for the smiles along the way.

Saving is ALWAYS up to you.

I prefer hard, and playing continuously though. However, many people will do shotgun starts.

I think as a default though: hard, with continuous checkpoints, and saving after every key.

I completed the main campaign like 5 times so I play in hard or nightmare with whatever saves

But in custom maps, mostly that I played start in hubs, so don't matter if you complete a level with all the weapons, the hub will remove your weapon's and every levels start for fresh and I really like that.

Of course. As a follow up, is there a big UVMAX (or QUAKE equivalent) scene for QUAKE? Like, do people try to single segment really challenging maps and post demos as proof?

Do you go for all secrets every time you play through the campaign?

I choose Medium in a continuous journey saving in the middle of a level when I don't have time to finish but usually finish a level. Levels are short enough where you can finish it in about 15 minutes

Not sure why this post got downvoted - it's a genuine question...

I play a lot of OG Doom community maps, and used to play a fair bit of Quake community maps too. In each context it depends on personal preference and the challenge at hand. Quake like Doom 1 has an episodic structure where you lose all your weapons and stats at the end of each — so ‘pistol start’ is just not a thing worth pursuing (and with modern tools, authors are able to enforce these kinds of resets themselves if that’s how they intend their content to be played), so I’ve never bothered.

I will say the main difference between Doom & Quake is how much combat mechanics challenge contributes to the experience. Doom II has extremely tight weapon & enemy roster mechanics, and challenging combat can be a really inventive & rewarding experience that depends on balancing to your skill level. Many Doom maps I’ve really wanted to see how hard I can take and have set myself restrictions and practiced strategies and trained myself on to push myself, and it can be an absolutely awesome experience. To be brutally honest I have simply never felt this with Quake. Some maps are more challenging than others, and in recent years the community & Machine Games have managed to produce new mechanics and encounter designs that elevate the game massively, and the challenges are inventive and enjoyable — but I have never felt the desire to push myself beyond medium difficulty. Some players just really enjoy maxing things on hardest settings but even with amazing new innovations like the Quake Brutalist Jam conversion it is simply never as interesting to increase combat challenge as in Doom. This isn’t to say that Quake is a lesser game, but the enjoyment is far more in atmosphere and artistry.

As for saves policy, I just do it on gut feeling based on the map in question. But the modern source ports like IronWail implement auto save, and modern tooling allows authors to script that too. This can sometimes lead to you getting lazy with strategy if you come to rely on it, and very rarely the engine can ‘get it wrong’ and save you in a situation where you’re pretty much guaranteed to die and you’ll have to start from scratch. But again — just trust your gut. More so than Doom, I’d say — where many players use ZDoom and apply all sorts of ridiculous mods and settings to change core mechanics and experience — there really is no wrong way to play Quake.

Except that you should really use a community source port like IronWail or vkQuake: the official remaster Kex engine has some horrible input lag / prediction and rendering and audio modifications that diminish the experience IMO.

I play it the same approach as I do DOOM (continuous) with the exception of choosing Nightmare for Q1. Nothing else is different enough to warrant an alternate approach.

People always have, I'd presume

Quake wasn't made with a clean start each map like Doom was. Decino did it but it was exceptionally difficult in some maps. Note that the video, as it shows the whole game, is somewhat spoilery

I play normal, most people play normal or NM. Some mods have custom difficulties built in that are even harder than nightmare!

Most speedrunners AFAIK go easy.

Hard is a bit weird because technically, while NM monsters are programmed to go full turret and fire nonstop, their lesser movement makes them easier targets. So on hard, monsters might not shoot as much, but will move around more. Voreballs are also faster than you on hard still.

Some mods like QBJ3 will add special abilities to monsters on NM difficulty

1. Depends on the mod. I might play Nightmare, but if not then it's Hard, depending on if / how the mod changes Nightmare difficulty.
2. Continuous. ID1 isn't designed to be 100%'able with shotgun start due to zombies (decino has proven it's possible, but like 6 maps are a huge pain to do so) and I'm not a fan of regathering every weapon. A lot of community mods aren't designed for shotgun start either.
3. I quicksave often out of habit. I only quickload scum when I'm trying to make a tricky jump for secret hunting, usually. If I die in the middle of a map, I'll load from the start unless it's a long map (think Dwell or even the new DawnTM) then I'll load a save.
