Anyone else not really digging Dawn of the Machine?

I'm guessing the main response to this will be "get good" and I can accept that, I'm not great at these games.

But man, these levels go on for FAR too damn long. And I don't remember this much precise platform jumping being required in base Quake. Almost feels like they were trying to make Metroid Prime in Quake? Maybe I'm at a disadvantage because I'm on console, but missing some LONG jump, falling into lava and getting sent back to the beginning AGAIN is just soul crushing.

I feel like I'm spending more time wandering through empty halls trying to figure out what the hell to do than mowing down enemies. My couch co-op partner already dropped out, and we made it through Q1 and Q2 with all the expansions. This one is just plain frustrating though.

I mean, you can't complain too much, because it's free I guess.

You kind of sound like you have not experienced much of what the mod community has to offer, which tends to be much more complex and challenging in the base campaign.

I love it but I've been playing fan-made Quake map packs for almost a decade now. Stuff like Arcane Dimensions, Alkaline, Brutalist Jam, Peril, Mjölnir, etc. The maps in those also tend to be gigantic and with a higher difficulty. I love it but it's a massive step up from vanilla Quake in complexity.

The levels aren’t that long. Obviously they’re nothing like the Quake levels made in 1996. Like you say, get good.

Just use quick save before platforming. 😅

slyr1x · 9 Sep 2026 at 22:52 · permalink

It sounds like you're issue is that you're not quick saving enough if at all. People who play on PC can quick save and load at the touch of the F5 and F9 keys. So whenever there looks to be some tricky platforming that's a place to quick save.

Most people don't actually restart the entire stage on a death unless they're Purposefully challenging themselves.

I’m not! And I’ll tell you why … I only play couch coop on PS5 with my partner. You can’t play any addons that way except for the few official ones. Wish they would have added support for THAT for the anniversary.

Quick: SAVE

sanya9272 · 9 Sep 2026 at 22:53 · permalink

I have played Quake on PS4 and I have to admit it is extremely difficult compared to PC.

I'm liking it, but I'm also playing on console (Xbox) and yeah the maps aren't easy to play on controller.

Hey, I understand this feeling! I usually play intoxicated and for the first time ever I was completely lost in a level lol. Next day sober I found the exit. Usually Quake levels are a lot easier for a drunk to just blast through.

Quick save constantly. That’s how I do it

chenfesacw · 9 Sep 2026 at 22:54 · permalink

It's on console to and you just pause then press whatever your RB equivalent is and LB to load.

I'm constantly quick saving

How far in are you?

I was very underwhelmed by the first 3 levels, it gets a lot better after that.

I remember that in Serious Sam HD they just made the Y button Quick-save.
