Might be a very unpopular take

Imo now with both Dimension of the Machine and Dawn of the Machine, Quake is better than anything Doom has produced.

Those 2 DLC's are better than any doom (I played all aside from doom3). I enjoy is far more and think they are better designed.

Am I the only one who thinks so?

Quake 1 imo is just generationally the best.

These 2 DLCs are objectively better than DOOM 3-4-Eternal-TDA, but definitely not better than DOOM 1-2

I always liked Quake more than Doom, it's just a step up in every way. And community made map packs have shown the massive potential of full 3D architecture for a while now, it goes far beyond anything Doom is capable of.

The enemy roster of Quake is also just more varied and fun to fight than Doom's.

You’re not the only one, that would be weird.

These two are essentially the closest we get to a sequel for Q1. I love they bring almost souls n horror feel (esp Dawn) to Quake.

I think Doom has more potential for a more varied and tightly designed fight at least with the vanilla monsters. Might be biased, I'm mostly a Doom player and haven't really played any of the newer Quake stuff. I like Quake mostly for its atmosphere above anything else haha

I think Warpspasm, Dwell episode 1, Arcane Dimensions & SMEJ have a better claim on this TBH

I think when you consider Doom community contributions like Sunlust it becomes harder to draw a clean line under it.

Is it a competition?

I think the reason why Quake doesn't really an equivalent is because it doesn't have as much gameplay depth (which is weird, because in theory it's just Doom but 3D), very few maps push Quake to it's gameplay limits like Doom does, what they mostly do is make it look better, but Doom WADs do much more.

Im a massive quake fan myself but that sounds like some otherworldly glazing going on there

i can never decide, i like both (doom i+ii and quake 1+2)

Yeah Quake is tech and atmosphere, but Doom 2 provides such amazing combat mechanics and the community have really finessed them. Quake simply never has that challenge dynamic. A very skilled mapper can design an encounter where fiends, vores and ogres provide interesting dynamics but like you say the monster roster is mechanically inferior. I think SCVMFVCKED tries to buck that trend (with significant nods to Sunlust, lol) and Quake Brutalist Jam switches up the combat mechanics to a degree where strategy and talent make more of a difference, but on a pure gameplay level … Doom 2 is the apex of golden age id.

I can respect this. Also made by the same company so it would only make sense for the latter game to take steps ahead of its predecessors. Quake level design is a little more intricate and detailed, while Doom is simple and blocky. Personally I just prefer the art style of Doom. I can definitely get down with Quke though. Played 1 & 2 and all of their expansions.
