I scoured the internet and I could not find any evidence that the original creators intended to BJ's name to be a reference to this German officer.
Instead, the name is stereotypically Slavic-Polish. History has not recorded how the German officer came by this name, but his ancestors did live in the Prussian Empire, which had an ethnically diverse population, including Slavs and Poles.
The creators of Wolfenstein 3D, where the name first appears, have said their intention was to position BJ as an American of Polish descent, giving him both and immediate and historical opposition to Nazism.
Seeing as they did not have access to internet searches, and that the German officer is not well-known in America, it is unlikely that they were aware of the German officer and his name.

Okay. Sure. But there's no evidence that they did. They've been asked in interviews multiple times about the origin of the name. They always responded with the Polish aspect, never mentioned the German officer, and never said they talked to historians.
