Giving martials more than one reaction per turn

jason_zhuang · 10 Sep 2026 at 13:11 · permalink

i have always think of giving full martials ( barbarian, fighter, monk, rogue) extra reactions a tier a the end of tier 2 and begining of tier 3, but making then conditional, so say fighter and barbarian at level 10 get an extra reaction that can only be use for op OA, monk and rogue can only used theirs for deflect attacks and uncanny dodge, i dont know if this is actually good or not, so i want to read what your think and what would you do instead if you think is meh? would you lower the level? give more reaction at higher levels? something quick, simple an useful for martials

ANOTHER martial post? What's going on?

The people have woken up, the illusions of the wizard-folk no longer fool them.

That's far more of a boost for the Monk than anyone else (with Opportunity Attacks not being all that common if they aren't using Sentinel), and Monks do not need that boost. It's hard enough to damage them once.

Turns out people like swinging swords around, or the fantasy of It. But Gameplay loop and mechanics are subpar. So this posts happen.

at Tier 3, I'd hope a frontline skirmisher is gonna have more sources of incoming damage than a single attack per round lol

The gameplay loop was subpar for 10+ years at this point. Even after ritual casting there wasn't such a large influx of "here's how to fix martials" posts.

And I don't subscribe to the idea that suddenly the whole d&d community just "rose up" after Arcana Unleashed dropped.

I love the idea! With barbarian, they could get a special reaction that allows them to attack an enemy that made an attack roll against the barbarian or to an ally within 5 feet of the barbarian

They're often attacked more than once per round, but they also need more than one attack to land, which may be difficult with sources of Disadvantage, including Dodge, Grappled/Prone, Darkness (Shadow), or Poisoned (Mercy).

Playerbase Is growing.

I myself im new to DMing. I got to play last year and got hooked.

The guys Im DMing for are also new to It

And from the 6 guys, 4 went martial. I didnt incline them to It, they literally just wanted to be: (guy with Shield that protects everyone, big strong guy that crushes enemies, the other one likes Kung fu movies ..., the other likes medieval Knights).

I dont think my experience Is isolated but who knows.
