Curious about "cheat dice"

Breakerzote · 10 Sep 2026 at 13:11 · permalink

I'm not some player who is trying to cheat out a campaign. I'm actually a dungeon master who has a couple people at the table who tend to roll fairly low, the worst of the bunch hasn't rolled more than a ten in probably 7 sessions. I was wondering if anyone knows an actually good "weighted dice", because I kinda want to get something more like a d20 that isn't obviously fake for actually important rolls that I want them to succeed on without making it too obvious and making them feel bad or something. Maybe not weighted towards 20 but just a higher number. Any help is appreciated and yes I know this isn't exactly the scripted way but everyone does things differently.

Let the dice roll as they may. It’s just a game. Since you’re the DM, you can adjust the adventure. If you want you can roll your own dice behind the screen and pretend they came out some other result if you want.

You need to clarify if you're talking about actual dice or some kind of virtual RNG stuff.

Just roll behind the screen and say they pass.

That is how I do it; roll behind the screen and announce what I want the result to be.

Etsy is probably the best place to find that sort of thing.

Loaded die dont really work consistently. They favor maybe one half-ish of the die but not by much. Statistically speaking rolling with a loaded die is barely different from rolling a regular die. So it would be wisest to find another solution to this problem.

BUT for the sake of your blessed heart that wants to gift those barely- better odds to your die cursed players

You can make your own. Pouring resin is fairly simple. They might not be as polished as the professionally made ones but all these resin die with little objects in them are all a little bit loaded. Any tiny thing inside a die changes the weight and makes it less even. You could play around with adding small objects to your homemade die to experiment with this.

Have others tried their dice?
Have they tried other dice?
Where did they get their dice?
If they keep rolling low there might be issues with the dice

If there's no risk of failure you shouldn't be asking for a dice roll. If you need them to succeed for the story to progress then you're doing something wrong lol.

Cheating at TTRPGs is such a lame idea. I mean there is literally no win/loss conditions in TTRPG play, WTF do you need to cheat for? Pathetic. 🤷

Failing forward is an option.

They throw a rock at an enemy. They fail, but hit a bees nest, ow the bees are attacking the enemy.

They search for traps, but activate it. Thankfully they were crouched or that blade would have hit for sure.

They try to charm the bar maiden for information but fail. A grumpy blacksmith got a good laugh from the attempt and buys the player a pint and tells them what they want to know.

Failure doesnt mean that they just fail, but can mean that they succeed in other ways.

So before getting loaded die, go through a couple things first, and use loaded die as a last resort. I say that because if they or the rest of the table find out…it might go south.

First-try a new die set. Totally fair if you’ve already done that, but it might be worth it to go for something other than resin.

Second-try a dice tower, a decent reputable one with good reviews. Some people legitimately suck at rolling dice (see Las Vegas)

Third-try a dice popper, Etsy has a couple that you can change or add dice into. I think it’s called the “dice jail popper”.

Lastly-try a Spindown D20. And just like a loaded die, keep it low-key to avoid any drama or hurt feelings.

If none of those things work, then go for the loaded die.

Have you bothered to salt test that player's dice to see if they were poorly balanced?

If you don't know how, add salt to warm water until the die floats on the surface. Spin test it and see if it has a proclivity to stopping on certain numbers. A better balanced die will spin more freely.
