Split personality character

youngmichael · 10 Sep 2026 at 13:11 · permalink

Hi everyone I’m planning on making a character in an upcoming campaign with a split personality. I wanted to know about balancing and other stuff I should be wary about. This dm is a first time dm but has played for a while so I don’t wanna make it too hard for him.

My idea is Based off of moon knight and for the balancing in the game I was thinking of multiclassing where each personality has one class and later on maybe can merge classes kinda or work together. The idea is an armorer artificer and a forge cleric. With the good being forge related. I feel that thematically the 2 classes work together with different personalities. How the 2 classes will work is I’ll have to different stats for each character. And I’ll be multiclassing artificer and cleric so probably lvl1 artificer lvl2 cleric or something along those lines. Note in the party we have 2 experienced players and 3 inexperienced players.

Do you guys think this character will be balanced and fun. Or do you think I should save this concept for a more experienced dm and another campaign.

This is a lot of homebrew and micromanagement for a fairly new group.

Ordinary Multiclassing RAW can be a mixed bag. merging classes is basically asking for an on-the-fly new homebrewed class that balances features from completely different categories.

Definitely shelve this. Or just roleplay the personalities but mechanically run an ordinary class set up.

Strikes me as a gimmick that'd be fun to play around with for a one-shot, but may get a bit grating in a longer form campaign.

One of my players did the duel personality and it was stupid as shit. I told him it wouldn’t work so I let him try and fail.

Absolutely not.

You're talking casually about having two sets of stats when most dms would just say no. Have you asked your dm about this idea of yours yet?

If you don't want to make things too hard on the DM, I'd avoid doing something this complicated. Especially with newer players in the group, it's probably easier for everyone to play a more straightforward character. It's going to be harder on the DM and it might confuse newer players.

That's without going into the many ways a character like this can become disrespectful of people with dissociative identity disorder, which is always complicated.

Don't. This is a bad idea that many have suggested before you, and many will suggest again.

Just play a Barbarian and do a funny voice when you're using Rage or something.

Roll a barbarian, rage is the other personality. Don't do anything more complex.

It's on the same vein as the false hydra, sounds good in concept but is absolutely dreadful to play in reality.

If you're actually worried about overcomplicating the game for a first time dm; No.

If you must, do it RP only. Its split personality, theres absolutely no reason to have different stats and different classes.
