Mute spellcatser concept

Blackcore98 · 10 Sep 2026 at 13:11 · permalink

Hello, I was thinking about gow a mute spell caster might work. Since sign language is in the game now would you consider that for both V and S components or do so just play with the idea that only spells without that component work. Alternatively is the " croak / exhale" sound most mute people can make good enough.

Purely here for fun cooncept ideas to spice up.a charecter arc

No. Sign language is not verbal

No mouth, no verbal components. and also no, verbal components must be spoken loud and clearly.

I really like the idea of sign language as a verbal component replacement, which is a boon in situations like a silence spell being cast (basocally immune) but then if your hands are bound you can't cast verbal only spells. Though ultimately, it is up to the DM's discretion.

As long as you're not trying to finesse your way into getting the Sorcerer Subtle Spell metamagic for free, it's a workable concept. Maybe you're mute but your spellcasting is more noisy, to compensate for being able to cast without speaking (more crackling sounds when channeling magic and the like).

Flavor is free, so you flavor it however you like. The characters cast a series of quick spells to make the verbal components, you draw out in the sky the language of magic, etc etc.

The only way this is a problem is if you expect to be able to cast in a silence spell, subtle cast, or whatever because your mute.

Also by rules

"Verbal (V)

A Verbal component is the chanting of esoteric words that sound like nonsense to the uninitiated. The words must be uttered in a normal speaking voice. The words themselves aren’t the source of the spell’s power; rather, the particular combination of sounds, with specific pitch and resonance, sets the threads of magic in motion. Thus, a creature who is gagged or in an area of magical silence can’t cast a spell with a Verbal component."

Must be spoken but as I said flavor is free. So I wouldn't mind provided you don't try to make it be something more then flavor.

Hope this helps.

That's good, do like the idea of it being a Boon , maybe for an arcana cleric or a follower of mystra, or from a patron for the vestage warlock .

I was also thinking of a spin on telepathy

Goo Warlock can cast some stuff without Verbal.

Subtle Spell Sorcerer

Enchantment and Illusion Adept have subtle casting.

But no, verbal conponents need to be spoken out loud.

Though I would probably allow weird semi mute noises as verbal components. They must be able to be identified as spells by others. No gaming the system.

The only way I could see this working is having another aspect handle verbal components. Eg a speaking box, or familiar parrot. I dont like just erasing the weakness though.

I would rather go the route of a sourcerer though and not speak using subtle spell. You would really feel it when you run out of points.

Get spells to write words in the air for most comms and call it good.

Like maybe a amulet that projects your mental voice into the world.

Blackcore98 · 10 Sep 2026 at 13:11 · permalink

I do like the air writing idea

I mean there are workarounds flavor wise that keep that from being an issue. Start casting with your sign language? Prestidigitation-esque lights/sounds emanate from your hands, and people are cued in.

I considered making this character concept with the old Artificer, which had a feature at 1st level that allowed you to make items that could magically play sounds, which could in theory serve as stand ins for verbal component spells.

But nuArtificer can just make ball bearings, so...

Play a bard, they use music for spellcasting!

I was thinking maybe " magical " sign language that when a spell is signed speaks allowed

Blackcore98 · 10 Sep 2026 at 13:11 · permalink

I was thinking " magical sign language" that speaks allowed when the spell is completed. So silence still works as normal
