1) is there a way to pay money for this?
2) Is it eventually going to revert to a price higher than $0 (zero)?
3) Why did they make this free? that's just smart advertising for their Wolfenstein brand. oh wait, I just answered it.

4) I mean I GET WHY, but also Why not allow us to pay money for it if we want?

For me, it's a question on how the game aged. I can't remember if it was paid back in the days because it was always free to me. Game is just amazing the way it is and the f2p will allow players arounds team to enjoy this 2003 wonder.

ET released as a free game. Why would they suddenly start charging for it now? (Ignore Quake Live.)

ET was NEVER A PAID GAME. it was 100% a free download from day one. RTCW on the otherhand, had a single player story, as well as online. that was a paid game. But ET, is ONLY online and will always be a free downloadable game.

I remember this being free back in the day. Only Wolfenstein game I picked up because it was free and didn't involve zombies or other weird crap.

@ everyone: thanks to everyone that replied. I won't reply to each individually, but I'll say this: I did not know (or think about) this being free back at its release.
Interesting how multi-player games have gone from shareware/freeware --> pay a set retail price --> Now: free-to-play.

Just buy Return to Castle Wolfenstein if you want to so bad

It was supposed to be a non-free extension for RtCW but ended 'cancelled' and released for free
It was even supposed to have a solo campaign; fans rebuilt it for RealRtCW, I believe you have it on the RealRtCW Workshop here
