Legacy is just an updated version of ET with many improvements. You can still play on the same servers. There's less players these days, but still some busy servers.

Don't install the 64 bit version of ET Legacy. You must install the 32 bit version. All servers run the 32 bit. I had the same issue as you.

I play on macOS, so I can only play ET Legacy. From 7PM until 10PM, the top servers are full, around 40-45 players per match.
Yes and it has decreased since. We're long past the heyday with tens of thousands of players, but I'm grateful this nearly quarter of a century old game still has so many fans.

I’m not sure honestly. I have a 2024 MacBook Pro with macOS 26 and I play on the 2.85 version of the game that was released last week. Only legacy servers, I guess. I only play on one server, Team Muppet ET Legacy.
Ah yeah, that explains it. Legacy is the only 64 bit mod.
