Are the older wolfenstein games ( 3d, SoD, RTCW, 2009)canon in mg wolfenstein because there are events from it that are referenced in the MG wolfenstein games like in the first mission of TNO Deathshed said to BJ "I've seen you before" which is direct reference to 2009

Deathshead was first in Return to Castle Wolfenstein and returned in Wolfenstein (2009)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the main timeline of MachineGames (MG) connects vaguely to Wolfenstein 2001 and 2009, with The Old Blood seemingly overlapping with 2009. The others before those are in a different universe. I also saw somewhere that Doom and Wolfenstein MG are connected.

No. They’re not connected. There are too many direct contradictions between both games that make them incapable of lining up in any conceivable fashion. They at most borrow elements from previous games, TNO is therefore a soft reboot at best.

I seem to remember even Commander Keen being linked, with him being the grandson of BJ. Really, it was just a younger studio in the earlier days of videogames where saying two characters from different franchises were related wasn't going to create whole swaths of people online tying the timeline into knots to try and make everything fit.

MachineGames treat their saga as its own continuity, but it does reference the older games here and there.

In terms of there being no contradictions, the 2009 game fits within this new continuity, as it was also the one that introduced Karoline Becker and Hans Grosse tossing her around towards the end is referenced as being the reason for why she is in a wheelchair. The 2009 game mentions Deathshead’s X-Labs from Return to Castle Wolfenstein - those levels from that game could also fit within this continuity, but not the rest of the game, however, because we get a new interpretation of Castle Wolfenstein in The Old Blood, as well as a new Helga (von Schabbs instead of von Bülow). I don’t really see how any of the other stuff would fit in.

There are no real connections between the older games and the Machine Games continuity beyond a couple of referenced events and some common characters.

That said, if you play RTCW and 2009, they're also not necessarily going to destroy your experience of the MG saga.

Timeline 1 - MUSE: Castle Wolfenstein (1981) and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein (1984)

Timeline 2 - Wolfenstein 3d & Spear of Destiny (1992), SOD is a prequel to Wolf 3d. Episodes 4-6 of Wolf 3d take place before episodes 1-3.

Timeline 3 - RTCW (2001) and Wolfenstein (2009). 2009 is essentially a sequel to RTCW. There is mention of the Spear of Destiny in 09, so the events of SOD may have been planned to be rebooted for the cancelled sequel.

Timeline 4 - The MG games. They loosely continue from timeline 3, the events do technically happen, but the timeline has been altered for the extended war and the fact the nazis won ww2. This is somewhat a soft-reboot in terms of continuity. The Old Blood is very reminiscent of the events of RTCW, so it feels like it is adapting that into the extended war timeline.

It seems like the loose timeline is ToB/RTCW, then 2009, then TNO. But the dates dont exactly line up and there are some other minor differences, so the canon pre-TNO is a bit loose.

Old Blood is definitely intended as a remake of the first two missions of RtCW, but there are a good bit of differences. Old Blood/RtCW is the first time that BJ enters the castle, so that would make the first two 3D games (and probably the original top-down Apple II game) all just dreams that BJ had after those events.

So RTCW and 2009 definitely still happened since Caroline and Deathshead exist, as well as BJ referencing locations like the X-labs, but maybe not exactly as we see in those games. The games before that likely did not happen 1-1, but rather happened as dreams.

I would say it enhances it since you get to see the origins of Deathshead's and BJ's long rivalry across 3 games before finally taking him down.

TBH apart from a few minor contradictions, the continuity fits fairly well.

This is also largely my take on it.

The major events of RTCW and 2009 still happened before the MG series, just maybe not 1-1 as we see them.

Still totally worth playing, imo they connect to the new games quite well, especially RealRTCW which now has the Egypt DLC on PC!
