Why does CS 1.6 still have an active player base, and how do you reliably spot bots?

Hey guys, I've been enjoying some classic CS 1.6 matches lately. Given how old the game is, what do you think is driving its longevity? Also, are there specific signs or console commands to easily tell if everyone in a match is human? Appreciate any insights!"

there are communities like wristhax that have several servers with regular members.

type status in console and look for bot though some plugins let you mask that with a fake steam id now. i mainly spectate and look if they are playing like bots

open console and write status

It will tell you if the server has bots it also shows who is playing from steam and steam id and it shows people who are playing nosteam those people are shown with the VALVE_ID tag.

its like soul food, i dont know it just feels natural? it's also instant, you can just boot it up, join a server, and start playing in less than 10 seconds. worst case you wait a minute for a round to end. as for bots, check the server in tsarvar (website), it gives a more accurate bot number than the default server browser.

First of all some ppl can't afford good PCs so they are forced to play like Diablo 2/Starcraft 1/Warcraft 3/CS 1.6 and they have mby bad internet too you can run 1.6 on rly limited internet, the engine is great/movement feels so good the russian duck bhopping strafe jumping. Also it is a very hard skilled game like you can jump peek and if you land instantly be precise, small little bugs like weapon switch makes first bullet rly accurate etc, newer iterations are made way easier for example red rock jump on Nuke nowadays they watered it down to a easy to reach spot, wallbanging was also so tactical in 1.6. It was a real tac-fps. No skin BS gambling financing, massive community server infrastructure

For NA region I really like playing on ClassicCS: 185.150.189.24:27015

It has the default economy which I prefer. 16k every round is great until there are 4 awps and 30 flashbangs per team every round.

Nostalgia + simplicity to me. Same game I've played off and on for 20+ years. No "let's make this sweeping chang to drive engagement" bullshit. No skins, no leveling, just log in and compete.

Ironically for me it’s because I don’t care to be sweaty in competitive anymore, and cs2’s casual modes are full of bots. They just stand around in spawn rotating and jumping and when they detect a real player joining they votekick you. Then you try to rejoin and the matchmaking puts you in the same server, so there’s literally no way to play a casual game when this happens. It’s fucked that stupid fucking matchmaking took away what we used to have: community and choice. Now we don’t get to choose our maps or who we play with, even in casual modes. So 1.6 and Source will always have something 2/GO don’t have. If you find bots in a server you can just leave and find another.

There are many CS 1.6 servers and plenty of players as well.
But the big problem is that servers lie about their real player counts. The console status command is no longer a guarantee — maybe it was a decade ago. Today, fake‑player plugins overwrite bot entries with regular player IDs.
On top of that, there are “server boost” instances that connect fake players (bots) to the server, making them indistinguishable for an average player.
We at derax.gg are dealing with this too, and recently we started disqualifying such servers from the ranking. And don’t worry — CS 1.6 will always be here.
