what exactly is the reason for why backburner crits are sometimes inconsistent? people always regurgitate this like it completely ruins the weapon (it doesn't) but I do sometimes notice not getting crits when I should have or getting crits when i shouldn't have, but I've never had a clear answer on this besides "source spaghetti, flame particles jank" or something vague like that.

Same reason backstabs sometimes fail and facestabs exist, the hitboxes are just... connection from server side to client side has a big role

It has a much harsher angle requirement that backstabs [90° vs the knifes 180°, iirc). I'm pretty sure this is true of the Back Scatter as well.

Iirc backburner checks for crits by comparing the movement vectors of flamethrower particles and the target? That and the harsher angle required

Soundsmith did a "making of" for the Backburner explaining the "dot product" computation for flame particles vs player movement, and the math makes my brain hurt.
