Modern FPS Games Are Doing Too Much...

I just played Wardogs after seeing so much hype about it on social media, and I gotta be honest, modern FPS games are exhausting. After an hour of randomly dying again and again, buying guns and gear again and again, and taking helicopter rides again and again, Wardogs is exhausting, and ultimately I'm just going to keep playing the tried and true older Call of Duty, Halo, Gears, and Battlefield games.

FPS games peaked between 2004-2016 imho. Modern FPS games just cannot hold my attention. Everything is trying to go for realism and immersion nowadays, whereas back in the day it was just about making a fun experience. I simply don't care if my choice in weapons and gear have risks. When you make that a mechanic of FPS games, you've lost the plot. Most people just want to pick a gun and run around and kill people. If I have to spend more time in menus than playing the game, you've lost the plot. Like, I'm sorry but you will never be able to convince me that modern FPS games have evolved in a forward way compared to older games. Modern FPS games are just too complicated. Less is more. Simple is better. I don't want a million attachments and weapons and gear items.

Edit: I should add this is in reference to FPS MP/PvP games, but kinda applies to FPS SP games as well; like, I genuinely would rather replay the older Call of Duty, Halo, Gears, and Battlefield campaigns than play whatever the fuck some of these newer games are.

"Most people just want to pick a gun and run around and kill people."

How do you know this is even remotely true? You are applying your opinion to the masses. Just because you have an option doesn't mean that it's held by most people. Companies have data that supports the things they chose to implement into their game, and if most people didn't want a little bit of customization then they wouldn't be making every game have it and the games without it wouldn't be lower than all the other games with it in the sales charts.

I agree except for the Hell Let Loose series. They do a great job of simple to start but deep to master gameplay. You could even ignore a lot of the deeper mechanics and just be a dumb grunt the entire time playing.

I used to pretty much only play FPS games but I haven't played a new one in years at this point. The genre has been done to death. The multiplayer games are either mil sims or battelpass, loot box, live service. I'm not sure about single player. I know there has been a resurgence of boomer shooters, but otherwise FPS single player games seem to be kinda dead atm.

At the vendor there's a button to auto purchase your last load out. Then hop on one of the dozens of helis there and that's it. I don't even think it takes me more than 2min to get back in the fight.

Sounds like you made the game complicated yourself.
