Basically title. I can do good sounding stuff (instrumental guitar - like ambient, post-rock kinda) but I add layers on top of layers on top of layers, there's that nice crescendo, it sounds really full and loud and emotional - and then what? Just stop abruptly? That might work for one song, but not for all of them.

What do you do? Bend down and turn the loop volume down so it fades out? Can't think of anything lamer than that lol.

Any tips?

Shut off the loop but keep playing something on one instrument and then slow it down.

Better than nothing, but that is still a very sudden shift in dynamics

You can always do the fade out as you mentioned. Some of the greatest songs ever do that. "Don't Stop Believing" and "More than a Feeling" come to mind.

You can also have some songs just move right I to the next one without a pause in between.

I dont mind the fadeout. It's the bending down when performing live that irks me lol

Add some delay and kill the loop. Let the delay echo fade out

I play pop-style music on a loop pedal so yeah I just end it abruptly after the last chorus or whatever. Sometimes sing/strum a short hang tag after the loops are gone

Works great for my genre but I can see where it might be trickier with ambient music

I will say that playing without shoes makes it a lot easier to turn knobs with your feet, if you want to make it slowly quieter that’s a great way to do it without fear of looking silly

Get a volume pedal for it?

This is good approach in music in general yeah

Don’t arrange songs in a way where you just keep adding layers onto layers. If all you ever do is build up, the music has no dynamics, and the ending can then feel like falling off a cliff. That’s fine here and there, but if every song is like that, it’s simply boring. So, don’t just add, also remove throughout a song. Then the ending can feel as natural as if it were being played by a full band. The whole song and set will also be more fun to listen to from the audience’s perspective.

From my point of view, if you use a looper live, it’s best to do it in a way that doesn’t really sound like looping. Unless you play some kind of dance music, the looper should be a tool to serve the arrangement rather than becoming the defining sound of the performance.

Aside from that, the fadeout doesn’t have to be lame. You can use an expression pedal to control the looper’s volume and use it to crossfade between the loop and your live instrument.

Half Time!

You can't do it more than 3-4 times in a set per say, but it stays full while dropping the energy.

Even better if you have track/layers control. Even an undo can work to thin texture.

Previous comment was good too, practice doing 2 elements live so you can switch from a 3-4 later loop to 2. This is great for the middle of compositions too.

Would would if only affected the loop volume and not the "dry" signal
