This might be a dumb question but I’ve never flown before and am anxious lol

How do I check a bag? Based off research I am confused if I bring my checked bag thru TSA or not. Also confused on how to check the bag period, and how I know if it made it to my plane or not

You check it at the counter before going to TSA. It's the same counter where you can get your tickets, etc right when you walk in an airport

You need to go to the counter. Your airline/flights check in counter to check the bag. That's the first thing to do at the airport. There may be self serve option but if you're nervous about it, best go to the counter.
Plan enough time for all of it.

You won't know if it made it per se but errors are far and between. You just have to trust the airline, it will do everything from the counter to the luggage carousel in the destination country

Not a dumb question. But probably easier to ask AI for a detailed answer. Say which airport and airline and it can give specific instructions as to where to drop off the baggage, where the security checks are, etc.

When you get to the airport, look for the signs for the airline you're flying with. Head to the airline's area and there will be kiosks you can use to tag your bags and an area to do them off. There are also normally, and this may vary by airline, folks there that can help you get checked in and your bag checked while explaining the rest of the process to you. Honestly, I have flown a lot and still prefer to take my bag to the desk and check it in with a person, just because I hate messing with the kiosks. Have a good flight!

honestly don't worry, everyone asks this their first time. you go to the airline check-in counter at the airport first, they weigh it and put a tag on it, then it disappears behind the counter. you don't bring it through TSA, only your carry-on and yourself go through security. when you land, follow signs for baggage claim and wait at the carousel for your flight number

When you get to the airport, you’ll go to your airline’s check-in counter or bag-drop area. You’ll give them your ID and your flight information, and they’ll put a luggage tag on your suitcase and send it off to the plane. You’ll get a baggage receipt/tag, so keep that somewhere safe.

You don’t have to worry about your suitcase getting on the right plane — that’s what the baggage tags and airport baggage system are for. When you arrive at your destination, you’ll go to the baggage carousel listed for your flight and wait for your suitcase to come around. Just check the tag on the bag before you grab it, since there can be a lot of luggage that looks alike! (I like to put some obviously identifiable thing on mine like a luggage strap).

And since you’re worried about your luggage getting lost, I would suggest you put a tracker inside your suitcase. If you have an iPhone, an airtag is a great option. It won’t prevent the bag from getting lost, but you can use the Find My app to see where it is, which can be really reassuring if your suitcase doesn’t show up right away.
If you don’t have an iPhone, there are similar trackers made for Android phones. The important thing is to get one that’s compatible with the phone you use.
Put the tracker inside the suitcase rather than on the outside, and set it up before you leave home so you know it’s working. Also put your name and contact information on an outside luggage tag, AND on the inside as well.

The other posters have provided great information. To add two points;

1) If your flight have a stopover, confirm that your bag is checked to be sent to your final destination. For example, say your flight is from A to B, and then from B to C (with B as the stopover, and C as the final destination).

The people at the airline counter will normally check your bag through to "C" but it is a good practice for you to confirm it to make sure your bag does not end up in "B". You can do this by looking at the luggage tag they will give you which has the final destination airport ID and a serial number. This tag is normally attached to your boarding pass. Always keep this tag because it acts as a proof that a bag belongs to you (your bag will have an identical tag with the same serial number). When you collect your bag from the carousel at the final airport, check that the two tags match just in case there are other similar looking bags on the same carousel.

2) If flying internationally, there are some countries where there is a requirement for passengers to take their checked luggage from a carousel to go through customs at the first airport of entry, even if that was not the final destination airport, and then to check the luggage back in again after customs. For example, the USA. The airport staff will usually be there to explain the process and to help out if needed.

honestly, if this is just a short trip you want to use a carry on bag. It needs to fit the airline requirements as to size and will go in either an overhead bin or under your seat. But you get to avoid the whole check-in process. Some airlines like to add fees to each checked in bag. Avoid the shock.

Put your name and contact info inside your bag. Consider adding an air tag too, especially if it’s not a direct flight. You can get TSA compliant luggage tags at TJ Maxx or Marshall’s for about $10.

One thing to check is that there are no existing tags on the bag. For example, if someone has used the bag before you, there might be a sticker on the bag with that person’s prior destination on it. Remove all such tags. The airline staff will check, but the tags are easy to miss. The tags are computer scanned to get the bag to the right plane.

One more thing to keep in mind. Many people all over are new to flying. The airport staff are used to this. Tell them it is your first time flying and they will help you.
