It's really not that dangerous. The infamous whiskey rebellion was nothing but farmers who were making their own.
It was legal in the US until 1868 to distill your own.
The 5th Circuit Court ruled two years ago that the ban is unconstitutional - unfortunately their district only covers Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana. This was a ruling on federal law so the state bans are still in effect
I believe Missouri is the only state that allows any kind of home distilling. It must be distilled for personal or family use, you may not sell it. 100 gallons a year if you are single, 200 gallons in a household with two or more adults.
