You can view the entirety of Quake or view a specific Quake game and find out the best time to hop on so you'll have a better chance at facing real players.

Heres August so far:

* 1,009 peak concurrent players (Aug 16), 504 on average
* 978 servers hosting real matches - meaning 2+ humans and an actual frag, not just an idle server
* 7,891,962 frags scored by real players, counted between polls
* 123,902 hours of Quake played
* Twitch: 54 streams live at peak, 1,803 viewers at peak, plus a leaderboard of the top streamers

Also on there: the busiest servers and most played maps, top gametypes/mods/countries, and a world map of where people are playing

You can view the whole page here - https://quakehub.net/state-of-quake

On the main state of quake page you can see which quakes have the most concurrent players in the "Which Quake was most alive" section

Added data for duels. Best time of the day to duel, most played duel maps per game, and most popular duel servers. Can see it here - https://quakehub.net/state-of-quake#duel-zone

Are the remasters included in those numbers and on all platforms?

QuakeHubs numbers come from polling public dedicated servers directly. The remasters are different because their multiplayer runs through PlayFab matchmaking lobbies which causes those to be invisible from the outside.

Quake (2021 remaster) does support real dedicated servers but almost nobody runs one so almost all Quake remastered multiplayer can't be seen.

Quake II (2023 remaster) has no dedicated server mode at all so none of its multiplayer is counted. We count classic Quake II which can be played using the Q2PRO client. You can see instructions here - https://quakehub.net/quake-2-servers#how-to-play

And Quake Champions has no dedicated servers. The last time a Quake got dedicated server support was 11 years ago in 2015 for Quake Live when it launched on Steam.

I hope that if we ever do get a new Quake that it will have dedicated servers, modding, and mapping support. QuakeHub shows theres still a fanbase that plays every night on all of these old Quake games, it really is a testament to how great multiplayer Quake is. Please id or machine games give us a Quake with these features like John Carmack and the original id guys did way back when!!!

And when I say Quake (2021 remaster) supports real dedicated servers its actually a mess. Dedicated engine servers running remaster content don't show in the in-game browser at all since only PlayFab servers appear there so the dedicated engine servers are join-by-IP only.

I run a steam account, same as the popular server Rockets Only, that uses a pre-30th anniversary build of the game because that's the last build where a logged-in client can sit in hosting mode and still have the server be queryable from the outside (like how QuakeHub and https://servers.quakeone.com/?gameId=5 sees them) There is no headless dedicated server for the Quake 1 remaster.

The site queries every public server directly every 90 seconds (enumerated from the master servers, plus Steam for Quake Live) It's the same protocol the games in-game browsers use. The numbers are then filtered by bot detection (which is still a work in progress) and if a player is spectating.

If you know of a server where the count is actually wrong let me know.
