Why do people create maps for no money for games like ET; especially trick jumping and puzzle maps?

I have always wondered who these people are who create all the additional competition maps and TJ maps over the years. Do they just have a passion for the game or do they have a passion for map creating? Is it practice for a career in gaming programmers? Creators like Niji making all those amazing trick jump maps... who does that?

Maybe they like the game? Like all two dozen of us that come to this sub.

I mean we used to do things for fun until we copied the fucking corporations owning our life. Maps and skins used to be free on Counter Strike. It was the joy of the game. Now we're enabling ourselves to be slaves. Sad. I've seen so much changes for the worse.

I feel like I recognize your reddit name as a dude who's been around ET since the old days and I'm surprised you have to ask this type of question.

There was never any money in trick jumping in ET. In general, most of this stuff started before there was any expectation of financial gain in gaming whatsoever. It was all passion! The only tourneys in ET that were paid was like quakecon in the USA then some in Europe probably, because the competitive scene was generally always higher quality there

You probably recognize me correctly, i ran a clan and a lot servers and played competitively for a while. I remember Jumping around on a half completed TJ map after a 3v3 etpro matchup and was amazed at how well the map was being made and how shitty the software was to make them.

TJ is for the love of the game. I still remember as a kid trying to use the skills I learned trickjumping on Fuel Dump.

The same reason that makes people spending money on projects related to ET (splatterladder costed me roughly €8000 since I took over the project many years ago)

Dude, i was 15 and worked on the Bridge of Remagen for ET for three years, including field trips and whatnot. And i loved it. It was passion, learning, creativity, community, all at once.

This is an odd question to me. Why does anybody do or make anything? Passion, enjoyment, hobby, entertainment. Loads of reasons. Not everything is about money.
