Quake 1 is a dark, Lovecraftian gothic horror shooter, while Quake 2 is an industrial military sci-fi shooter focused on fighting an alien-machine race called the Strogg.

I loved Quake 1 when it came out. It was perfect. I loved the story about ranger, slipgates and the different dimensions and runes. I loved the original soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails. It was simple, but it was perfect.

Quake 2 was dramatically different. All the sudden you were a marine fighting an alien race called the Strogg. It made no sense.

I played Quake 2 a lot and prefer it to quake 1. That being said that’s like saying I like Brisket and prefer it to pulled pork. Both are delicious and should be appreciated.

Id was a chaotic company at the time and ended up keeping the name "Quake" for a game that was barely related. There have been some efforts since then to connect the lore of the two games.

They tied them together with Call of the Machine and Dimension of the Machine.

Quake 1 was pretty good, but at the time the departure from the DOOM formula of a sci-fi / marine themed shooter to a Lovecraftian horror game didn’t mesh well with the community. Quake’s success was way more on the multiplayer aspect of the game; I had lots of friends playing Quake1 but I can’t remember anyone buying the expansion packs. I didn’t even play them myself until the recent re-release on current gen consoles.

But the Lovecraftian setting of Quake1 eventually grew on some of us. In my case, it was mostly after reading Lovecraft stuff that the weirdly named enemies started making more sense. BTW, Quake wasn’t quite polished on release. They were going to make the Lovecraftian setting more explicit, but couldn’t due to time constraints. We would’ve run into more bosses from HPL’s world.

MachineGames tied Quake 1 and Quake 2 together by making their official expansion campaigns—Dimension of the Machine for the Quake 1 remaster and Call of the Machine for the Quake 2 remaster—share a connected dimensional narrative. \[1, 2\]

How They Tie the Games Together
The Shared Destination: At the end of the Quake 2 expansion Call of the Machine, the player travels through a portal that leads directly into the eldritch, gothic realm of the Dimension of the Machine from Quake 1.

Origin of the Strogg: This crossover implies that the cybernetic alien race from Quake 2 (the Strogg) and the eldritch, dimensional monsters from Quake 1 originate from or are connected through the same multiversal machinery and slipgate experiments.

Retconning Continuity: Historically, Quake 2 only used the name "Quake" due to a lack of time during a messy development cycle. MachineGames used these modern remaster campaigns to retroactively bridge the gap, turning two totally different sci-fi/fantasy timelines into a single unified multiverse.
