Not “favorite movie.” Not “best movie.” I mean the one that changed your taste, your standards, or the way you notice things on screen.

For me it was Children of Men. I went in expecting a grim action movie and came out noticing blocking, long takes, sound design, and how little a film actually needs to explain if the world feels lived-in.

After that I started watching movies differently. Less “what happens next,” more “how is this shot, why does this cut land, what is the movie doing to me.”

The Matrix

The Matrix did this for me, I was 14 and it literally broke my brain. after that I couldnt just sit and watch movies anymore, I was always looking at camera angles and asking why the director put that scene in that order

Bit of a silly example but in Pacific Rim I really noticed how hard they worked at making all of the CGI shit feel heavy, which made the CG in other movies feel like light airy styrofoam.

I was a smug asshole who believed that every movie that wasn't 100% 'airtight plot' 'serious' and other bullshit wasn't a 'good movie'. I kept smacktalking popular movies because they weren't perfect.

Then I met what a TRULY AWFUL MOVIE is. I was absolutely wrecked. I was so mind-crushed by the sheer abyss of awfulness that I had witnessed, that to cleanse my palate, I immediately watched SANTA SLAY afterwards, and I HAD FUN. After that, my tolerance and perspective shifted completely.

I’m not a big Oscars fan boy but understanding WHY certain movies won Oscars actually changes what I look for in other movies. For example, understanding that 1917 won the cinematography Oscar because it APPEARS to be filmed by one camera in one take makes you look for creative cinematography decisions in other films.

The American made me really appreciate cinematography. Nearly every scene could be paused, framed, and hung on a wall. Before that, long shots were boring and trying too hard. I remember seeing that movie at 25 and thinking "Am I a grown up?"

First time you watch a movie, just enjoy it and watch start to finish without stopping. Try to notice things but also let yourself be entertained, emote, etc. After that, then pausing and analyzing is welcome. But first time through, let it play.

Fight Club really made me appreciate certain things about films starting with "cigarette burns." Also made me notice certain background elements that become important later.
